A suspect is in custody after multiple people were stabbed at New York City’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, leaving at least one person seriously injured and prompting a major emergency response at one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs.
Emergency crews responded shortly after 7 p.m. to reports of a stabbing at or near Penn Station, the major transit complex beneath Madison Square Garden. According to the FDNY, six civilians were injured. One person suffered serious injuries, two others sustained moderate injuries, and three people were listed with minor injuries.
Five victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital, while another person with minor injuries was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, according to reports.
Amtrak Police, which is leading the investigation, said a suspect had been apprehended. The New York Police Department referred questions about the incident to Amtrak Police because the case falls under Amtrak’s jurisdiction inside the station.
TRENDING TODAY
“Earlier this afternoon, Amtrak Police responded to a reported stabbing at New York Penn Station,” Amtrak said in a statement. “The suspect has been apprehended and an investigation is underway.”
Authorities had not immediately released the suspect’s name, possible charges or a motive. Early reports from several outlets described the case as developing, and officials have not yet provided a full timeline of what led up to the attack.
The incident created concern across Midtown Manhattan because Penn Station is one of the most crowded transit locations in the United States, serving Amtrak, NJ Transit, Long Island Rail Road and subway passengers. The area is especially busy during evening travel hours, and the stabbing happened during a period when large numbers of visitors were already moving through the city.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had been briefed on what he called a “horrific stabbing” and thanked Amtrak Police and first responders for their quick response. He said his thoughts were with the victims, their families and everyone shaken by the violence.
Mamdani also said there were no immediate impacts to Amtrak service and that city officials remained in contact with Amtrak as the investigation continued.
The attack happened as New York prepared for a particularly busy stretch around Madison Square Garden and Midtown transit hubs. The New York Knicks’ NBA Finals run has drawn large crowds to the area, and the city is also preparing for events connected to the FIFA World Cup. Authorities are expected to monitor whether the stabbing affects security planning around major gatherings, though officials had not announced service disruptions or event changes tied to the incident.
Public safety in and around New York’s transit system remains a major concern for residents, commuters and visitors. While violent attacks inside major transit hubs are still relatively rare compared with the volume of daily passengers, incidents involving knives or random violence often receive widespread attention because they create fear in places where large numbers of people have limited room to move.
The investigation will likely focus on where the attack began, whether the victims were targeted or chosen at random, what weapon was used, and whether the suspect had any prior contact with law enforcement or transit authorities. Officials may also review surveillance video from inside the station and nearby streets.
For now, authorities are urging the public to rely on official updates as investigators work to determine what happened. Because the motive remains unclear, any claims about why the attack occurred should be treated cautiously until Amtrak Police release more information.
The victims’ conditions may also become clearer in the coming days. Officials said at least one victim suffered serious injuries, but early reports did not indicate that any injuries were fatal.
The stabbing is likely to renew debate over security at major transportation hubs, particularly at Penn Station, where local, state and federal law enforcement agencies often overlap. The station’s size, underground layout and constant foot traffic can make policing difficult, especially during peak travel times.
As the investigation continues, commuters should expect an increased law enforcement presence in the area. Officials have not said whether additional security measures will be put in place long term, but the attack is likely to intensify scrutiny of public safety around Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.
Why It Matters
The incident matters because Penn Station is one of America’s busiest transit hubs, used daily by commuters, tourists and intercity travelers. A multi-victim stabbing there can create fear beyond the immediate crime scene and raise questions about safety in crowded public spaces.
It also matters because the attack happened during a busy period for New York City, with major sports events and tourism bringing more people into Midtown Manhattan. Even without service disruptions, the incident may affect security planning and public confidence.
What Comes Next
Amtrak Police are expected to continue investigating the suspect, possible motive and the circumstances leading up to the attack. More details may be released after interviews, surveillance review and charging decisions.
City and transit officials may also review security staffing around Penn Station, especially as large events continue near Madison Square Garden.
