Car explosion near Wall Street sparks panic in Lower Manhattan rush hour

Panic spread through Lower Manhattan on Tuesday evening after a vehicle caught fire and exploded near the Charging Bull statue, sending thick black smoke over the Financial District during rush hour.

The incident happened near Broadway and Beaver Street, close to one of New York City’s busiest business and tourist areas. Office workers, commuters and visitors were nearby when flames consumed the vehicle and a loud explosion shook the area.

Videos shared across social media showed the car burning moments before the blast. Other clips showed pedestrians running away as smoke rose above the streets near Wall Street.

The New York City Fire Department responded quickly and worked to put out the fire while police closed nearby streets and moved people away from the scene.

Authorities said no injuries were reported, despite the explosion happening in a crowded part of Manhattan during peak evening activity.

Witnesses described confusion and fear as sirens filled the area and emergency crews rushed toward the burning vehicle. Some people initially feared the blast could be connected to a larger security threat because of its location near major financial buildings.

Officials have not confirmed what caused the vehicle to catch fire or explode. Investigators are reviewing whether the incident may have been caused by a mechanical problem, electrical failure or another issue.

At this stage, authorities have not reported evidence of terrorism or intentional foul play. The investigation remains ongoing.

The explosion happened near the Charging Bull statue, one of the most recognizable symbols of Wall Street and American finance. The landmark attracts large numbers of tourists each day and sits close to several major financial institutions.

Emergency crews established a perimeter around the area while firefighters sprayed water on the burned vehicle and police redirected traffic away from nearby streets.

The incident temporarily disrupted movement through parts of the Financial District as investigators examined the wreckage and worked to determine whether any hazardous materials were involved.

Footage of the fire and explosion quickly went viral on X, Instagram and TikTok, with many users reacting to the dramatic smoke cloud rising above Lower Manhattan.

Officials are expected to release more details once investigators determine the exact cause of the fire and explosion.

For many New Yorkers leaving work Tuesday evening, the incident turned a normal rush hour near Wall Street into a frightening scene filled with smoke, sirens and emergency response vehicles.
