Israel Says Top Hamas Military Chief Killed in Gaza Airstrike

Israel says it killed Mohammed Odeh, a senior Hamas military commander, in an airstrike in northern Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces said Odeh had recently served as head of Hamas’ military wing after the death of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who was also killed in an Israeli operation earlier in May.

The IDF said Mohammed Odeh, described as head of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in a strike in northern Gaza.

According to the IDF, Odeh was involved in planning and coordinating Hamas’ October 7 attacks against Israel.

Israeli officials said he was responsible for operations that led to the deaths, abductions and injuries of Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Odeh played a role in the murder and kidnapping of Israelis, while Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the IDF and Shin Bet for carrying out the strike.

Katz said Israel remains committed to targeting Hamas leaders connected to the October 7 attacks, warning that those involved would be pursued wherever they are.

The IDF described Odeh’s death as another major blow to Hamas’ military leadership.

Israeli officials say many of the senior commanders involved in the October 7 massacre have now been killed during the war.

Odeh reportedly held the top military position for only 11 days before being targeted.

Reports said his wife and sons were also killed in the airstrike.

Hamas has not immediately issued a detailed public response confirming Israel’s full account of Odeh’s role.

The strike comes as Israel continues military operations in Gaza and says it is working to prevent Hamas from rebuilding its command structure.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly said Hamas will not be allowed to retain military or civilian control over Gaza after the war.

The killing of Odeh is likely to intensify debate over Israel’s ongoing campaign in Gaza, with Israeli officials calling the strike a counterterrorism success and critics continuing to raise concerns about civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis in the territory.

Why It Matters

Odeh’s reported death would mark another major Israeli strike against Hamas’ senior military leadership. Israel says it is systematically targeting commanders linked to October 7, while Hamas continues trying to preserve command networks inside Gaza.

What Comes Next

Israel is expected to continue targeted operations against Hamas leaders and military infrastructure. The strike could also trigger further retaliation attempts from Hamas or allied groups as the war continues.

The Israel Defense Forces said Odeh had recently served as head of Hamas’ military wing after the death of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who was also killed in an Israeli operation earlier in May.
