Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says she will not run for president in 2028, shutting down years of speculation that she could seek the Democratic nomination.
Whitmer, a two-term Democrat and one of the party’s most prominent governors, made the comment while speaking to a reporter in Michigan.
“There will be a robust group of people running for president,” Whitmer said. “I will not be one of them in 2028. I can tell you that.”
The statement marks one of her clearest rejections yet of a potential White House bid.
TRENDING TODAY
Whitmer has long been viewed as a possible national contender because of her leadership in Michigan, a key battleground state that has played a major role in recent presidential elections.
She rose to national prominence during President Donald Trump’s first term as a frequent critic of his administration and delivered the Democratic response to Trump’s 2020 State of the Union address.
She was also considered as a potential running mate for Joe Biden in 2020.
Speculation about her future grew again during the 2024 campaign, especially after she traveled to New Hampshire to campaign for Kamala Harris after Harris became the Democratic nominee.
But during Trump’s second term, Whitmer has taken a more pragmatic approach, looking for areas where she can work with the White House on issues affecting Michigan.
That approach drew attention last year when she appeared in the Oval Office with Trump during a meeting focused on state priorities.
Images of Whitmer trying to shield her face with folders during the appearance quickly went viral and angered some Democrats.
Whitmer later said she had gone to the White House to advocate for Michigan and did not expect to be pulled into a televised exchange with reporters.
Her decision not to run in 2028 removes one of the most recognizable Democratic governors from what is expected to be a crowded primary field.
Potential Democratic contenders could include Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Josh Shapiro, Andy Beshear, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ro Khanna and several Senate Democrats.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has also said he does not plan to run in 2028.
Whitmer is term-limited as governor, leaving questions about what she will do after leaving office.
For now, however, she is making clear that her next move will not be a presidential campaign.
Why It Matters
Whitmer was widely seen as one of the Democrats’ strongest possible 2028 contenders because she governs a major battleground state and has national name recognition. Her decision not to run reshapes the early Democratic field and leaves more room for other governors and national figures.
What Comes Next
The 2028 Democratic field is still expected to be large and competitive. With Whitmer out, attention may shift more heavily toward figures like Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris and other rising Democrats.
Whitmer said she expects a crowded Democratic presidential primary in 2028, but made clear she will not be one of the candidates.
