A strange incident in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, left a woman injured after police say a dog accidentally discharged a loaded shotgun inside a parked truck.
The incident happened near the Short Stop convenience store after the truck’s owner parked outside and went inside briefly.
According to authorities, the owner’s dog was left in the back seat of the vehicle, where a loaded shotgun was also located.
Police said the dog moved around the back seat and stepped on the firearm, causing it to discharge.
TRENDING TODAY
The shotgun blast went through the passenger side door of the truck and sent pellets toward the street.
At that same moment, a woman was stopped at a nearby traffic light with her arm resting near an open window.
One pellet struck her in the arm.
Her injury was not life-threatening, and a family member took her to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Police initially believed the projectile may have come from a BB gun because of the small pellet-like object involved.
Investigators later determined that the weapon was a shotgun, not a BB gun.
No criminal charges have been announced so far.
The Scottsbluff Police Department used the incident to remind the public about firearm safety and Nebraska law.
Police said it is illegal in Nebraska to travel with a loaded shotgun inside a vehicle.
The department also emphasized that guns should always be handled, transported and stored safely, especially around children, pets and passengers.
What began as a routine stop at a convenience store turned into an unusual reminder of how dangerous an unsecured loaded firearm can be.
Why It Matters
The incident shows how quickly an unsecured loaded firearm can create a dangerous situation, even without human intent. Police say it also highlights the importance of following firearm transport laws and keeping guns safely secured inside vehicles.
What Comes Next
Authorities have not announced charges, but police are continuing to remind residents that traveling with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle is illegal under Nebraska law. The injured woman is expected to recover.
