Democratic criticism of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner is growing as party officials and commentators warn that his scandal-plagued campaign is exposing a deeper fight between the moderate and progressive wings of the party.
Platner, who is running to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins, has built a national profile as a left-wing candidate backed by progressive energy.
But his campaign has been repeatedly hit by controversies involving past online posts, inflammatory comments and a tattoo on his chest that resembled Nazi imagery.
The backlash has now moved beyond Republicans.

Some Democrats are openly questioning whether Platner is the right candidate for a race the party views as one of its best opportunities to flip a Senate seat in 2026.
Melissa DeRosa, a former aide to Andrew Cuomo, said the Maine race reflects a “civil war” inside the Democratic Party.
She argued that some moderate Democrats would not be upset if the party lost Maine rather than elect a candidate they view as politically toxic.
Former Biden press office chief of staff Yemisi Egbewole also said Democrats must answer for Platner’s behavior and called him a problem for the party’s moral credibility.
Platner’s past Reddit posts have drawn scrutiny from both Republicans and Democrats. The posts reportedly included crude and inflammatory comments, including remarks about a soldier shot by the Taliban.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has seized on the controversy, arguing that Democrats are shifting from quietly distancing themselves from Platner to openly disavowing him.
Platner also faced national attention after a video circulated showing him shirtless with a tattoo resembling the “totenkopf,” or death’s head, a symbol associated with Nazi imagery.
Platner said he did not know the tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol and said he planned to have it removed.
But some Democrats say the explanation is not enough.
Rep. Jake Auchincloss said he found the tattoo and Platner’s comments about it personally disqualifying.
He warned that Democrats would be making a mistake if they believed Platner’s political brand could help the party build lasting majorities.
Sen. John Fetterman also criticized Platner during a CNN interview when asked about antisemitism inside the Democratic Party.
Fetterman said the issue exists and pointed to Platner as an example, saying it was “crazy” that a candidate with such a tattoo could still be accepted by many voters.
Other prominent progressives, including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, have been quieter when pressed about Platner’s campaign.
The silence reflects the difficult position for Democrats.
Platner has support from voters who want a more populist and progressive challenge to the party establishment.
But moderates worry his scandals could damage Democrats in a race they believe should be winnable.
Senate Democrats see Maine as a major pickup opportunity in 2026. Collins has long been one of the few Republicans able to win statewide in a more moderate electorate.
If Platner becomes the nominee, the race could become a test of whether progressive outsider energy can overcome serious baggage in a high-stakes Senate contest.
For now, his campaign is forcing Democrats to confront a question they have tried to avoid: whether opposition to the establishment is enough to excuse a candidate’s past controversies.
Why It Matters
Maine is one of Democrats’ best chances to flip a Senate seat, but Platner’s controversies threaten to turn the race into an internal party fight. The backlash also shows how Democrats are struggling to balance progressive enthusiasm with concerns about electability and antisemitism.
What Comes Next
Platner will continue facing pressure from Republicans and moderate Democrats. If party leaders become more vocal, Maine’s Senate race could become one of the clearest examples of the Democratic Party’s internal divide heading into 2026.
Fox News reported that more Democrats are distancing themselves from Graham Platner as scandals around his campaign fuel a broader party split.
