Vance questioned over 2028 plans after Trump hints at possible Rubio partnership ticket

Vice President JD Vance dismissed questions surrounding a possible 2028 Republican presidential ticket with Secretary of State Marco Rubio after President Donald Trump recently praised the two as a strong political combination.

“I think very highly of Marco. He’s doing an excellent job as secretary of state and has become a close friend,” Vance said during a Wednesday press conference focused on the administration’s efforts to combat fraud and government waste.

“Right now, both of us are fully focused on serving the American people and handling the responsibilities we were elected to carry out,” he added.

Earlier this week, Trump hinted at the idea of a future political partnership involving Vance and Rubio, although he did not clarify which of the two could potentially lead a future presidential ticket. In recent months, Vance has also pushed back against reports suggesting there is growing tension between him and Rubio as attention slowly shifts toward the 2028 election cycle.
Who likes J.D. Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? Trump said Monday during a public appearance. “Sounds like a great ticket to me. Honestly, I think that’s a dream team.

JD Vance praised Marco Rubio as a strong secretary of state and a close friend, while emphasizing that both remain focused on serving the American people and carrying out their current responsibilities.

Vance later explained that discussions about future elections are among his least favorite topics while he is still focused on his current position in office.

“If I were an American voter, one thing I probably wouldn’t like is someone who’s barely been in office for over a year already trying to position themselves for another job years ahead,” Vance joked, referring to himself.

A reporter later argued that the media was not responsible for the growing speculation, since Trump himself publicly mentioned the possible Vance-Rubio pairing.

Vice President JD Vance reacted to President Trump’s comments about a possible 2028 political partnership involving Marco Rubio.

I don’t really think the president was trying to create some kind of televised contest over who succeeds him,” Vance responded. “That’s just not how I interpreted the comments at all.”

He also said it was natural for Trump to joke about politics and potential future scenarios, noting that the president has always enjoyed political conversations and speculation.

One of Vance’s primary responsibilities in recent months has involved leading the White House Task Force aimed at reducing fraud, abuse and unnecessary government spending.

The question surfaced as Vance appeared to be leading matters at the White House while President Trump attended a major U.S.-China summit overseas alongside Marco Rubio.

Wednesday’s press conference took place while Trump was overseas in China attending major diplomatic meetings alongside senior administration officials, including Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
