Trump, Zelenskyy and Netanyahu Lead Global Tributes After Lindsey Graham’s Sudden Death

Political leaders in the United States and abroad are remembering Senator Lindsey Graham as an influential foreign-policy advocate, military veteran and forceful Republican lawmaker following his unexpected death at age 71.

Graham’s office initially said the South Carolina senator died after a brief and sudden illness. Preliminary findings from the District of Columbia medical examiner later indicated that he suffered an aortic dissection linked to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. A final determination remains pending additional toxicology and microscopic testing.

President Donald Trump was among the first national figures to announce Graham’s death publicly, describing him as a patriot who remained deeply committed to the United States. Trump later said Graham had become like a member of his family despite their significant political differences during the 2016 Republican presidential campaign.

The two men developed a close political relationship after Trump entered the White House. Graham became a reliable supporter of many administration priorities, defended Trump during both impeachment proceedings and helped advance the president’s conservative transformation of the federal judiciary.

Trump highlighted Graham’s role in securing the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Graham oversaw an intensely contested process and became one of Kavanaugh’s most prominent defenders. He also helped move more than 200 Trump-appointed federal judges through the Senate.

Graham’s influence extended well beyond domestic politics. He was one of the Senate’s strongest supporters of military assistance to Ukraine, close relations with Israel and tougher action against Iran and Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was deeply saddened by Graham’s death and praised him as a defender of freedom. Graham had visited Ukraine 10 times since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022 and met Zelenskyy in Kyiv shortly before returning to the United States. Their latest discussions included Ukraine’s air-defense requirements and proposed additional sanctions against Russia.

Graham had been working on legislation designed to increase economic pressure on Moscow. Republican Representative Michael McCaul said Congress could honor him by advancing the sanctions measure, which Graham had promoted during the final weeks of his life.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Graham one of Israel’s greatest friends and said he understood the close connection between Israeli and American security. Other senior Israeli leaders also issued tributes recognizing his longstanding support for the country.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster described Graham as irreplaceable and praised him as a determined fighter for both his state and country. McMaster will now make the politically significant decision of appointing a temporary senator while Republicans prepare to select a new candidate for the November election.

Vice President JD Vance emphasized Graham’s rise from difficult family circumstances to become one of the country’s most powerful lawmakers. Graham’s parents died while he was young, leaving him with responsibility for helping raise his younger sister.

Former President George W. Bush remembered Graham as a knowledgeable senator who understood the importance of American engagement abroad, while Senate Republican leaders praised his humor, loyalty and willingness to maintain friendships across political divisions.

Not every assessment of Graham’s career was entirely celebratory. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna acknowledged Graham’s willingness to support immigration reform but noted their deep disagreements over military intervention and human rights.

Those divisions reflect Graham’s complicated political legacy. Supporters saw him as a committed defender of U.S. alliances and an advocate of strength against authoritarian governments. Critics viewed him as overly supportive of military intervention and argued that his foreign-policy approach contributed to prolonged overseas conflicts.

Graham served in the House before entering the Senate in 2003 and previously spent more than three decades in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve and South Carolina Air National Guard. His experience as a military lawyer heavily influenced his positions on national security, terrorism and the use of American power.

His death removes an experienced foreign-policy voice from the Senate at a time when Congress is debating support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, defense spending and relations with Israel and Iran.

Why It Matters

Graham’s death affects both American politics and international diplomacy. He was a dependable Republican vote, an influential intermediary between Trump and other lawmakers, and a prominent advocate for several U.S. allies.

His departure could also change the momentum behind legislation involving Russia, Ukraine and defense policy. For South Carolina voters, it begins an accelerated process to select someone to replace a senator who represented the state for more than two decades.

What Comes Next

Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to bring together American officials and foreign representatives. Congress may also consider advancing Graham-backed legislation, including his proposed sanctions against Russia.

Governor McMaster must appoint a temporary successor, while South Carolina Republicans prepare for a special primary to choose their November Senate nominee.

American and foreign leaders paid tribute to Lindsey Graham following his sudden death.
