President Donald Trump has introduced a new temporary presidential aircraft, a converted Boeing 747 that was originally provided by Qatar and is now expected to serve as an interim Air Force One while the United States waits for two long-delayed replacement jets.
The aircraft, known as the VC-25B Bridge, was presented at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland with a redesigned red, white, dark blue and gold exterior. The plane is intended to support presidential travel until the next generation of purpose-built Air Force One aircraft is ready for service.
The unveiling immediately renewed debate over the aircraft’s origins, cost and security requirements. The plane was reportedly valued at about $400 million when it was provided by Qatar, a close U.S. partner in the Gulf. Critics have argued that accepting such a valuable aircraft raises serious ethics and foreign influence concerns, while Trump and administration officials have defended the decision as practical and lawful.
Trump praised the aircraft during the event, describing it as one of the most luxurious planes in the world and arguing that the United States should not rely only on aging aircraft while other world leaders travel on newer planes. He said turning down the offer would not have made sense, especially as the existing presidential fleet has been in service for decades.

The Pentagon has said the aircraft was accepted in accordance with federal rules and regulations. Officials have also emphasized that the plane has gone through modifications to meet the standards required for presidential travel, including security and communications needs.
Still, the project has drawn criticism from lawmakers and watchdog groups. Some opponents have questioned whether the aircraft’s conversion costs could place additional pressure on other defense priorities. Others have raised concerns about the security challenges of turning a previously foreign-owned luxury jet into a presidential command aircraft.
The aircraft is described as a “bridge” solution because it is not meant to replace the future Air Force One program permanently. Boeing has been working on two new presidential aircraft, but that program has faced delays and rising costs. The temporary jet is expected to help cover the gap until those planes are completed.
The existing presidential Boeing 747 aircraft entered service in 1990 during the administration of President George H.W. Bush. One of the older aircraft has now been marked for retirement, while another is expected to remain available alongside the new temporary plane until the replacement fleet is fully delivered.
Recent mechanical concerns have added urgency to the modernization push. Earlier this year, one presidential aircraft reportedly returned to Washington because of a minor electrical issue during a planned trip. Officials said the decision was made out of caution.
Supporters of the temporary aircraft argue that the president needs reliable, secure and modern transportation at all times. They also say the bridge plane helps reduce dependence on aging aircraft while the delayed replacement program continues.
Critics, however, say the arrangement creates unnecessary controversy at a time when presidential travel, government spending and foreign gifts are already politically sensitive issues. For them, the question is not only whether the aircraft can be made safe, but whether accepting such a high-value foreign-provided jet creates the wrong public perception.
The new aircraft is also expected to play a visible role in upcoming national celebrations. Trump said it would participate in a major flyover connected to America’s 250th anniversary events around July 4.
For now, the VC-25B Bridge gives the White House a more modern temporary presidential aircraft, but it also brings a political debate that is unlikely to disappear quickly.
Why It Matters
Air Force One is more than a plane. It is a symbol of American power, security and continuity of government. Because of that, any change to the presidential aircraft draws public attention. The fact that this jet began as a Qatari-owned aircraft makes the story even more politically sensitive, especially for critics who see the arrangement as raising ethics and transparency questions.
What Comes Next
The temporary aircraft is expected to support presidential travel while the U.S. waits for the next permanent Air Force One jets. Lawmakers may continue pressing for details about the aircraft’s cost, security modifications and long-term use. The larger debate will likely focus on whether the bridge plane was a smart temporary solution or a controversial shortcut.
