The Trump administration has reversed its decision to dismantle a major deep-sea monitoring network after opposition from lawmakers, scientists and ocean experts.
The National Science Foundation announced Thursday that it will no longer move forward with plans to remove or reduce remaining equipment from the Ocean Observatories Initiative, a $368 million system used to collect long-term data on ocean conditions. The agency said the system will continue operating, including planned maintenance.
The Ocean Observatories Initiative includes more than 900 instruments that track ocean health and environmental changes. Its arrays collect data on ocean currents, climate variability, marine biodiversity and other conditions that help researchers understand the ocean and forecast potential hazards.
The monitoring sites are located off the coasts of North Carolina, Oregon, Washington and Alaska, as well as in the Irminger Sea between Greenland and Iceland.

The reversal came after scientists warned that dismantling the system would damage research and weaken access to important climate and ocean data. Experts said the observatory network helps track ocean heating, supports storm forecasting and contributes to early-warning systems for severe weather.
The National Science Foundation said it had heard concerns from stakeholders who rely on the system’s data. The announcement followed bipartisan action in the Senate. Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley and Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski introduced legislation to stop what they described as the reckless dismantling of the system. The bill would block federal funds from being used to decommission the Ocean Observatories Initiative until the NSF completes a full review with stakeholder input.
Merkley criticized the original dismantling plan as wasteful and harmful to coastal communities, fishermen and climate researchers. Murkowski said the system provides essential information for researchers, industry and communities that depend on ocean data.
Some equipment from the Endurance Array off Oregon and Washington had already been removed from the water before the reversal. The NSF said it is now developing plans to service and redeploy that equipment.
The decision marks a rare shift for an administration that has rolled back several science and climate-related programs since returning to office. The Trump administration has also supported expanded deep-sea mining and looser fishing regulations, drawing criticism from environmental groups and scientists.
