A California man convicted of murdering his aunt inside their Bakersfield home was sentenced this week to 25 years to life in prison after a disturbing case that included graphic statements to investigators and an outburst in court.
Christopher Kaulaity was found guilty in April in the December 2024 killing of 45-year-old Maria Carmen Torrez. He was also convicted of using a deadly weapon during the crime. A jury later rejected his insanity claim.
Prosecutors said the fatal attack followed rising tensions inside a crowded home where Torrez lived with several adult relatives. According to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, an argument had broken out the day before the killing over problems involving the home’s only toilet.
Officials said tensions continued to build over the next 24 hours, with family members warning Kaulaity that he and his adult sister might have to move out if the conflict continued.

On the day of the killing, prosecutors said Torrez walked past Kaulaity in a hallway on her way to the bathroom. After the encounter, Kaulaity went to his bedroom, retrieved pepper spray and a knife, then forced open the bathroom door.
According to prosecutors, Kaulaity pepper-sprayed Torrez and then stabbed her multiple times in the back and neck.
After the attack, Kaulaity called 911 and told authorities he had stabbed his aunt. Deputies later responded and arrested him.
Court documents said Kaulaity made disturbing comments when describing the killing to investigators, comparing it to childhood memories of carving figures from Play-Doh. He also referenced the fictional character Norman Bates from the film “Psycho” while discussing how he held the knife.
During sentencing in a Bakersfield courtroom, Kaulaity reportedly lashed out at members of the victim’s family. The outburst came shortly before he received a sentence of 25 years to life.
The victim’s relatives described the emotional toll of the killing, while prosecutors emphasized the brutality of the attack.
Kaulaity’s defense had raised issues related to mental health and past abuse during trial, but jurors rejected the argument that he was legally insane at the time of the crime.
The case ended with Kaulaity being sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
